The old streets of Krakow are mostly pedestrian, as vehicular access to the historic city center is limited. The main streets are Floriańska and Grodzka, which together form the Royal Road, the traditional route leading to Wawel Castle.
Floriańska Street
Floriańska Street begins at St. Florian’s Gate (Floriańska Tower) and ends at Rynek Główny (Main Market Square) near St. Mary’s Church. Development of this street began in the 14th century, and many historic houses along it have been preserved to this day. Key points of interest include:
- A small market with paintings by local artists depicting Krakow
- Czartoryski Museum
- Pharmacological Museum (house no. 25)
- The first city hotel, now known as Hotel Polski (opened in the early 19th century)
- A historic tram line, initially horse-drawn and later electrified
- The most beautiful McDonald’s in Poland, located along the street
Grodzka Street
Grodzka Street continues from the opposite side of Rynek Główny and ends at Wawel Castle. Notable landmarks include:
- U Wierzynka, one of Poland’s oldest restaurants, dating back to 1364
- Palace under Baranami (house no. 27), hosting the eponymous cabaret since 1956
- Christopher Palace (house no. 35), now part of the Krakow Historical Museum
Other Streets
In addition to these main streets, Krakow’s old town features numerous small alleys and pedestrian streets, where visitors can discover small churches, sculptures, and historic buildings, making the area a pleasant environment for walking and exploring.
