Lisbon weather by the Atlantic

Lisbon has a mild, sunny climate shaped by the Atlantic. Summers are warm and dry, with afternoons of about 26 °C in July and August, more during heatwaves, and almost no rain. Winters are gentle, with 14–15 °C by day and nights rarely below 8 °C, but most of the year’s rain falls from October to April, with about ten wet days a month in autumn.

Festivals and the best months

May, June and September are ideal for climbing the hills of Alfama to São Jorge Castle or riding the old trams, with 21–25 °C and long, bright days. In June the Festas de Lisboa peak on the night of 12 to 13 June, when the city celebrates Santo António with grilled sardines and street parties in the old quarters.

Wind, rain and a trip to Sintra

A fresh north wind often blows in summer, so evenings by the river can feel cool. On rainy days, the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém, the Sé Cathedral and the National Tile Museum are good places to shelter. Sintra, with Pena Palace, is cooler and mistier than Lisbon, so take a jacket even in summer.
