Brașov weather in the Carpathians

Brașov sits in a basin surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, at about 600 metres, and its climate is cool and continental. Summers are pleasant rather than hot, with 23–24 °C in July and August, while winters are cold and often snowy, with daytime highs of 2–5 °C and frosty nights down to −6 °C. Late spring and early summer are the wettest, with showers or thunderstorms on about 17 days in May and June.

Old town, castles and mountain trails

From August to early October the weather is at its driest and most settled for the Black Church and Council Square, the cable car up Tâmpa and trips to Bran Castle and the Râșnov citadel. In June, plan outdoor walks for the morning, as afternoon thunderstorms often build over the mountains.

Winter and skiing

From December to March, the ski resort of Poiana Brașov, about 20 minutes from the city, usually has good snow, and the snowy old town looks like a fairy tale before Christmas. On cold or wet days, the Black Church and the lavish rooms of Peleș Castle in Sinaia, about an hour away, are good places to spend a few hours indoors.
