Tatranska Lomnica - Hrebienok trail

This walking route lasting more than an hour starts near the “Start” station of the lift to Lomnicky Štit in the Tatranska Lomnica resort and ends near the top station of the lift from Stary Smokovec to Hrebienok. The trail runs along the slope of the High Tatras mountains at an altitude of 1100-1200 meters from sea level.

Then there are two options for lifting. You can take the lift one stop to the Start station (located at an altitude of 1145 meters). Or you can overcome this climb on foot along a good asphalt road. Since the lift was closed, we walked. The road is very convenient and beautiful. But the elevation difference is about 300 meters, so this path cannot be recommended for everyone.

Near the Start station, a small country road goes towards Stary Smokovec into the forest. This is our path.

First, the route passes through alpine meadows, then descends into the forest.

In this area, dense forests of Tatra larch were badly damaged by a hurricane that passed through here several years ago, so the landscape is quite unusual. There are a lot of fallen trees here, others are only stumps, others are in a semi-disrepair and are about to fall onto the path. There are signs everywhere with the text “Caution, risk of falling trees.” In general, if the wind is strong, this trail may not be safe to follow.

The path is laid at approximately the same level. There are no strong descents or ascents along most of the route. But there are several difficult places and the trail is not very well maintained. Overall, this route could be described as easy.

The closer the route gets to Hrebienok, the better and healthier the forest becomes. At the very end, before climbing to Hrebienok, the trail crosses a small mountain stream with a beautiful waterfall on it. Here you can relax and take beautiful photos before the steep climb to the upper station of Hrebienok.

Having climbed to Hrebienok at an altitude of 1263, from here you can descend to Stary Smokovec either on foot in 30 minutes, or by a special mountain train.
