Slovenia

The top sights and landmarks in Slovenia blend alpine lakes, caves, and a short but scenic coast. Highlights include the iconic Lake Bled with its island church, the vast Postojna Cave, the capital Ljubljana with its castle and riverside old town, and the peaks of Triglav National Park.

General information

Slovenia is a small, green country in Central Europe, packed into the space between the Julian Alps and a short stretch of Adriatic coast. The capital is Ljubljana, the language is Slovenian, and the country belongs to both the European Union and the eurozone, using the euro (EUR). Famed for its lakes, caves, mountains and sustainable “green” tourism, Slovenia is compact enough to combine alpine and seaside scenery in a single trip. Late spring to early autumn is ideal, with winter drawing skiers.

Transport and how to get there

The main gateway is Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU), but many travellers also fly into nearby Venice (VCE), Trieste (TRS), Zagreb (ZAG) or Klagenfurt and drive in — the borders are close. Trains and buses connect the towns, though a rental car is the easiest way to explore the Alps, caves and coast. Ljubljana's centre is compact, pedestrianised and best seen on foot.

Prices

The currency is the euro (EUR), with prices a little below Western European levels. A guesthouse or budget hotel costs roughly €50–90 a night, mid-range hotels about €90–150. An inexpensive meal is around €10–16, a three-course dinner for two in a mid-range restaurant about €40–60, and a coffee near €2. A single Ljubljana city bus ride (Urbana card) is about €1.30, entry to Postojna Cave about €35 and Bled Castle about €19 (2026). Prices are approximate and change with the season.

Main attractions

The postcard image of Slovenia is Lake Bled, with its island church and clifftop castle, close to serene Lake Bohinj and Triglav National Park with the Vintgar Gorge. Underground, Postojna Cave and the cliff-set Predjama Castle astonish visitors, while the Škocjan Caves are UNESCO-listed. Ljubljana charms with its riverside old town, castle and Triple Bridge, and the coast offers the Venetian-flavoured town of Piran and the emerald Soča Valley for outdoor adventures.
