Albarracín is a small medieval town in the mountains of Aragon, in the province of Teruel, in eastern Spain. It is often called one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. The town is built on a steep hill above a bend of the Guadalaviar river. Its houses have a pinkish-red colour, which comes from the local red stone and plaster. Long stone walls with towers climb up the hillside above the houses. In the Middle Ages, Albarracín was the capital of a small Moorish kingdom, and later an independent lordship. The old town has changed very little over the centuries.
What to See
The best thing to do is to walk through the narrow, winding streets. Many houses have wooden balconies and overhanging upper floors, and some streets are so narrow that the houses almost touch. Walk up along the town walls for wonderful views over the rooftops and the river gorge. In the old town you can visit the cathedral, the main square with its arches, and the remains of the castle. The town also has small museums about its history. Around Albarracín there are pine forests with ancient rock paintings, which make a good short trip from the town.
How to Get There and Practical Information
Albarracín is about 35 kilometres west of the city of Teruel. The easiest way to get there is by car, as public transport is limited, with only a few buses from Teruel. There are car parks at the entrance to the town, and the old town is explored on foot. Walking around the town is free, and the museums and castle have small entrance fees. The streets are steep, so wear comfortable shoes. The town is at a high altitude, so it can be cold in winter. It is quieter in the morning and evening, after the day visitors leave.
