León Cathedral, affectionately known as the “Pulchra Leonina” — the “Beautiful Leonese” — is one of the purest and most graceful expressions of Gothic architecture in Spain. Built mainly in the 13th century in a style directly inspired by the great cathedrals of France, it is a marvel of slender stone, all height and light, its walls reduced almost to a frame for glass. It stands in the heart of the city of León, in the north-west of the country, a major stop on the Camino de Santiago, and is celebrated above all for one thing: its extraordinary stained glass.
What to See
The glory of León is its windows — one of the finest and most complete collections of medieval stained glass in the world, covering some 1,800 square metres in around 130 windows and three magnificent rose windows, dating from the 13th century onwards. On a bright day the interior is flooded with jewel-coloured light, an effect achieved by daringly thin walls braced by flying buttresses, so that the building seems almost weightless. Beyond the glass, look for the finely carved west portals with their rows of sculpted saints, the serene image of the Virgen Blanca (the White Virgin), the choir stalls among the oldest in Spain, and the cloister and cathedral museum with their medieval art. Simply sitting inside and watching the light change through the glass is the essence of a visit.
How to Get There and Practical Information
León is the capital of its province in Castile and León, in north-western Spain, well connected by train — including high-speed services from Madrid — and by bus, and a key waypoint on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. The cathedral rises in the centre of the old town, a short walk from the station across the river. Entry is ticketed, typically including the cathedral, its stained glass, the cloister and the museum, with reduced rates for seniors, students and pilgrims; for the full effect of the windows it is worth timing a visit for a sunny day, ideally late morning or afternoon when the light streams through. Allow around an hour and a half, and combine it with León’s other treasures, from the Basilica of San Isidoro to the Gaudí-designed Casa Botines nearby.
