Calafell Beach is a popular seaside destination on the Costa Daurada (Costa Dorada) in the province of Tarragona, Catalonia. Together with the neighbouring beach of Segur de Calafell it forms about 5 kilometres of uninterrupted golden sand along the Mediterranean, known for its calm, shallow water and family atmosphere. The main beach, Platja de Calafell, is more than 1 kilometre long and flies the Blue Flag.
Overview and Landscape
Calafell Beach is characterized by its long, wide strip of fine golden sand and clear, shallow sea that gently deepens, making it ideal for children and less experienced swimmers. The promenade, lined with palm trees, restaurants, and shops, runs the entire length of the beach and is perfect for walking, cycling, or enjoying a seaside meal. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed, and the beach is well-maintained and cleaned daily.
On the promenade stands Casa Barral, the former fishermen’s house of the poet and publisher Carlos Barral, now a small museum. Nearby is the Iberian Citadel of Calafell, a settlement inhabited from the 6th to the 2nd century BC and partly rebuilt as an open-air museum. The old village with the Castle of the Holy Cross lies a few kilometres inland.
