Granada weather at the foot of the Sierra Nevada

Granada sits at about 700 metres below the peaks of the Sierra Nevada, which brings big swings between day and night. Summer afternoons reach 34–35 °C in July and August, yet nights fall to about 21 °C, while winter days of 13–15 °C are followed by cold nights of 3–5 °C. March is the wettest month, with rain on about 12 days; summers are almost dry.

Seeing the Alhambra in comfort

Spring and autumn are ideal for the Alhambra: in April–May and October, afternoons stay at 20–25 °C, and the roses and fountains of the Generalife gardens are at their best in spring. In summer, choose an early morning slot or an evening visit to the Nasrid Palaces, and book tickets well ahead, as they often sell out.

Snow on the mountains, sun in the city

From December to April the Sierra Nevada ski resort, less than an hour’s drive away, usually has snow while the city below enjoys sunny days. On wet days, the Cathedral, the Royal Chapel with the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs and the tea houses of the Albaicín are good places to shelter.
