Madrid weather on the Castilian plateau
At about 650 metres above sea level, Madrid has a drier, more continental climate than Spain’s coasts. July and August are hot and almost rainless, with afternoons of 33–34 °C and only one or two wet days a month, though nights cool to about 20 °C. Winters are crisp and often sunny: 10–12 °C by day and close to freezing at night.
Spring and autumn in the capital
April–May and late September to October, with 19–27 °C, are the most pleasant months for walking from Plaza Mayor to the Royal Palace or rowing on the lake in Retiro Park. These are also the wettest seasons, with rain on about nine days in March, April and October, so carry a light jacket. In midsummer, sightsee in the morning and follow the Madrid rhythm of late, long evenings outdoors.
Art when the weather turns
On rainy or scorching days, the Prado Museum alone can fill a day, and the Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums are a short walk away along the Paseo del Prado, the city’s Golden Triangle of Art.
