Gothenburg weather on Sweden’s west coast

Gothenburg faces the winds from the North Sea, so its winters are milder than Stockholm’s but wetter and breezier. July and August reach about 20 °C with nights around 13 °C, yet showers are frequent, and July, August and October each bring rain on about 17 days. Winters hover just above freezing, at 3–4 °C by day, with more rain and sleet than lasting snow.

Islands, Haga and Liseberg

May, June and September, with 16–19 °C, often bring the most settled weather for a ferry trip to the car-free islands of the southern archipelago or a stroll among the wooden houses of Haga. In summer the Liseberg amusement park, one of the largest in Scandinavia, is at its busiest, and from mid-November its Christmas market fills the park with lights.

Bring a raincoat

Whatever the season, pack a waterproof jacket: the weather on the west coast can change several times a day. On wet days, the Universeum science centre, the Gothenburg Museum of Art and a long coffee break with cinnamon buns in a Haga café are the local way to wait for the sun.
