Stockholm weather on the Baltic

Stockholm is built on islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea, and it has four distinct seasons. Summers are mild and bright, with 21–22 °C in July and August and nights around 13 °C. Winters are cold and dark: from December to February days stay around 1–2 °C, nights drop below freezing and snow is common. Rain is moderate, spread over 8–12 days a month.

White nights and the archipelago

From late May to early August the days are very long, with up to 18 hours of daylight around Midsummer, when Swedes celebrate with maypoles and herring in the countryside. This is the best time for boat trips into the archipelago and to Drottningholm Palace, or for walks through Gamla Stan from Stortorget to the Royal Palace and Storkyrkan; September adds autumn colours at about 17 °C.

Museums for grey and dark days

In winter the sun sets by mid-afternoon, and the city turns to its museums: the Vasa Museum with its 17th-century warship, the Nobel Prize Museum on Stortorget and the City Hall, where the Nobel banquet is held. In December, the Christmas market in Gamla Stan and the candlelit Lucia celebrations brighten the long evenings.
