Basel weather by season
Basel, where Switzerland meets France and Germany on the Rhine, is one of the warmest Swiss cities. July and August average 26 °C, and on hot days locals float down the Rhine with their clothes in waterproof swim bags. Winters are mild for Switzerland, at 6–9 °C by day, but often grey, with rain or drizzle on 14–15 days a month from November to January.
Festivals through the year
Late spring and September are ideal for the old town and the Rhine promenades, with 19–24 °C. The famous Basel Fasnacht begins with the Morgestraich at 4 am on the Monday after Ash Wednesday, often in frosty air, and the Herbstmesse, Switzerland’s oldest fair, fills the squares from late October.
Museums for wet days
Basel has more museums than almost any city of its size, so rain is easy to forgive: the Kunstmuseum, the Fondation Beyeler in nearby Riehen and the Museum Tinguely with its moving machine sculptures can fill a whole wet weekend.
