Lucerne climate and mountain weather
Lucerne sits on its lake at the foot of Mount Pilatus, and the nearby Alps make it one of the wetter cities in Switzerland: from May to July it rains on 17–18 days a month, often as afternoon thunderstorms. Summers are mild at 21–23 °C, and winters are cold, with 3–6 °C by day and frost on most nights.
Clear days for the peaks
September and October bring the most stable weather, with 14–18 °C, crisp air and often brilliant views from Mount Rigi and Pilatus, which you can reach on the world’s steepest cogwheel railway. In winter the summit of Rigi frequently rises above the fog that covers the lake, so a sunny excursion is possible even on grey days in town.
Rainy hours by the lake
When it rains, walk across the covered Chapel Bridge with its painted panels, visit the Dying Lion monument nearby, or spend a few hours at the Swiss Museum of Transport, the most visited museum in the country.
