Rhine Falls, Switzerland

The largest full-flowing waterfall in Europe.

Rhine Falls, Switzerland

The Rhine Falls (German: Rheinfall) is a waterfall located on the Rhine River in northern Switzerland. It is considered the largest waterfall in Europe in terms of water volume. The falls are most impressive during late spring and summer, when snowmelt significantly increases the flow. During winter months, the discharge is typically two to three times lower.

Location

The Rhine Falls is situated near the town of Schaffhausen, close to the Swiss–German border. The nearest major cities with international airports are Zurich and Basel. The waterfall measures approximately 150 meters in width and 23 meters in height. Although other Swiss waterfalls, such as Staubbachfall, are higher, the Rhine Falls is notable for its width and the powerful force of the water. During periods of maximum flow, the discharge can exceed 600 cubic meters per second. The formation of the waterfall dates back more than 14,000 years, originating after the last Ice Age.

Access

Most visitors reach the Rhine Falls from Zurich by rail. The journey takes approximately 50 minutes, and there are several routes:

  1. Southern Bank (Schloss Laufen):
From Zurich Hauptbahnhof, travel to Winterthur (about 20 minutes), then transfer to regional train S33 to Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall (approximately 25 minutes). The station is located above Laufen Castle, and an elevator provides access to the viewing platforms. This route is generally the most economical, remaining within the canton of Zurich.
  2. Northern Bank (Neuhausen):
Travel from Zurich to Bülach, then transfer to train S22 to Neuhausen Rheinfall. This stop is located on the northern bank, near the town of Schaffhausen.
  3. Via Schaffhausen:
Direct trains connect Zurich with Schaffhausen in about 40 minutes. From there, visitors may walk approximately 3 km (around 40 minutes) to the falls, take the Rhyfall Express tourist train (about 20 minutes), or use a commuter train to Neuhausen.

Admission

The northern bank of the falls (Neuhausen side) is open to the public free of charge at all times.
Access to the southern bank, which includes Schloss Laufen and its observation platforms, requires an entry ticket. The site generally operates from morning until early evening, with hours varying by season. The standard adult ticket price is 5 CHF.

Excursion boats operate from the northern bank near Wörth Castle, transporting visitors to the central rock located within the waterfall. From the rock, panoramic views are available. Boat tickets cost around 10–20 CHF for adults, depending on the route, with departures approximately every 10 minutes during the main visitor season.

Nearby Landmark: Schloss Laufen

Schloss Laufen, situated adjacent to the falls, has been documented since the 9th century. The castle complex has been restored for tourism and includes an exhibition on the geological and cultural history of the falls, a restaurant, café, children’s playground, and viewing terraces offering close perspectives of the waterfall. A pedestrian path leads from the castle to platforms located directly beside the cascading water.
