Kusadasi Center / Grand Market

The old city center, which has been turned into one big marketplace

Kusadasi Center / Grand Market

Kusadasi Pedestrian Center is the historic heart of the resort, located at the foot of Kese Mountain. The narrow streets and old houses that once characterized this area have largely been transformed into the Grand Market (Grand Bazaar), filled with a wide variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants. Visitors can stroll along the main pedestrian streets, soak in the local atmosphere, and enjoy casual shopping without the hectic pace of larger tourist cities.

Highlights of the pedestrian center:

  • Main streets: Barbaros Blvd and Sağlık Cd, wide and lined with green spaces, benches, and cafes.
  • Smaller pedestrian streets branch off these main avenues, forming a network of walkable streets filled with shops and eateries.
  • The area is primarily frequented by locals and domestic tourists, offering a more relaxed atmosphere than the coastal beaches.

Among the historical attractions in the center is the Caravanserai Castle at the beginning of Barbaros Boulevard, as well as several mosques showcasing traditional Muslim architecture. While some old houses remain, most have been altered by modern shops, signs, or other commercial activity, leaving only traces of the city’s past.

Historic and cultural features:

  • A few old houses near Ataturk Boulevard and the embankment remain relatively untouched.
  • To see more authentic historical architecture, explore the old Greek-Turkish district on the slopes of Kese Mountain.
  • Several small mosques in the area showcase traditional Ottoman architecture.

The Grand Market itself consists of narrow streets lined with stalls, shops, restaurants, and cafes. Tourists can find souvenirs, clothes, carpets, and jewelry—though many branded items may be replicas. Sellers are generally polite but persistent, and bargaining is an expected part of shopping.

Shopping experience tips:

  • Bargaining can reduce prices by up to half in many shops.
  • Stores typically open between 9–10 am and remain open until midnight.
  • Both small souvenirs and larger items are available, making it a versatile shopping destination.

Finally, the pedestrian center offers a lively cafe and bar scene. A dedicated street of bars exists, but overall, the city is full of cozy cafes and casual dining spots, making it a pleasant place to spend the day or evening after exploring.

Leisure and amenities:

  • The area is calm and walkable, making it ideal for evening strolls or relaxing breaks.
  • Numerous cafes and restaurants provide local food and refreshments.
  • Bars are concentrated on a single street, but casual drinking spots are scattered throughout the center.
