Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most famous attractions and one of National Geographic’s 25 Wonders of the World. It is a large geothermal spa known for its milky-blue, mineral-rich water, set in a dramatic lava field. The lagoon covers an area of about 8,700 square meters and maintains an average water temperature of 37–40°C, making it comfortable to visit all year round, even in winter.

Although it looks completely natural, the Blue Lagoon is partly man-made and is connected to a nearby geothermal power plant. Over time, it has become a unique bathing site and a symbol of modern Icelandic wellness culture.

The Blue Lagoon is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, in southwestern Iceland. It lies between Reykjavík and Keflavík International Airport, making it an easy stop either at the beginning or end of a trip to Iceland. The surrounding landscape is volcanic, with black lava rocks, steam, and moss creating a striking contrast with the blue water.

• The water contains silica, algae, and minerals that give it its distinctive color. Silica is especially known for its skin-soothing properties, and visitors are often seen applying white silica mud from the lagoon.

• In addition to the main lagoon, the site includes saunas, steam rooms, in-water bars, relaxation areas, and spa treatments, making it one of the most developed geothermal spas in the world.

Entry to the Blue Lagoon is ticketed and must be booked in advance. Prices vary depending on the season, time of day, and service level.

All tickets include lagoon access, a silica mud mask, use of changing facilities, and a towel. Prices can increase during peak travel periods.

From Reykjavík
The Blue Lagoon is about 45 minutes by car from Reykjavík. Many visitors use shuttle buses that run regularly between the city and the spa.

From Keflavík International Airport
The lagoon is only 20 minutes by car from the airport, making it a popular stop immediately after arrival or before departure. Shuttle buses also operate on this route.
