Göttweig Abbey (Stift Göttweig) is a Benedictine monastery located on a wooded hill above the town of Krems an der Donau, in Lower Austria. The abbey overlooks the Danube Valley and is often called the “Austrian Montecassino” because of its elevated position and impressive scale. Founded in the 11th century, it is best known today for its Baroque architecture and panoramic views.

The easiest way to reach Göttweig Abbey is from the town of Krems an der Donau, which has good rail connections with Vienna. From Krems railway station, local buses run toward Göttweig Abbey, stopping near the lower access road; from there, a short uphill walk leads to the main entrance. Taxis from Krems are also a convenient option and take only a few minutes. For visitors without a car, combining a train to Krems with a bus or taxi is the most practical solution. Walking or cycling up to the abbey is possible for active travelers, but the climb is steep and requires good fitness.
