Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is one of the most famous landmarks in Greece and one of the most popular day-trip destinations from Athens. Built on a dramatic cliff above the Aegean Sea, the temple is dedicated to Poseidon, the ancient Greek god of the sea.

The site became famous not only for its historical importance, but also for its spectacular panoramic views and legendary sunsets. The combination of ancient ruins, sea cliffs, and golden evening light makes Cape Sounion one of the most photographed locations in Greece.

Main attraction

The main attraction is the marble Temple of Poseidon itself, originally built during the 5th century BC. Several original Doric columns still stand on the cliff edge overlooking the sea. Visitors walk around the archaeological site, enjoy the coastal scenery, and watch the changing colors of the sunset over the Aegean.

The area is also connected with ancient Greek mythology. According to legend, King Aegeus jumped into the sea from these cliffs, giving the Aegean Sea its name.

Most tourists spend time:

Tours, Tickets, and How to Get There

Cape Sounion is located approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Athens. The drive usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic. Many visitors travel along the scenic Athens Riviera coastal road, which passes beaches, marinas, and seaside resorts.

Sunset excursions from Athens are extremely popular and typically cost between €40 and €90 depending on transportation and guide services. Public buses also operate from Athens to Sounion at a lower cost, while rental cars are common for travelers who want to stop at beaches along the way.

Entrance tickets to the archaeological site cost around €20.
