The Monastic Island of Reichenau is one of the most important cultural and historical landmarks on Lake Constance. Located in southern Germany near the city of Konstanz, the island is famous for its medieval monasteries, Romanesque churches, vineyards, and peaceful landscapes. Since 2000, the island has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its outstanding role in medieval European culture, art, and learning.

The island’s importance dates back to 724 AD, when the monastery was founded by Saint Pirmin. Over the next centuries, the abbey became one of the most influential religious and cultural centers in Europe. During the early Middle Ages the monastery was famous for:

• its scriptorium, where monks produced beautifully illuminated manuscripts
• its theological school, which attracted scholars from across Europe
• its role in preserving classical knowledge during the medieval period

Many manuscripts created here are now kept in major European libraries and are considered masterpieces of Ottonian art.

What to See on Reichenau Island

The island is small (about 4.5 km long) but full of historical landmarks and scenic spots.

1. Abbey Church of St. Mary and St. Mark (Münster Mittelzell). The main monastery church is located in the village of Mittelzell. Highlights include:

• the Romanesque basilica architecture
• relics of Saint Mark the Evangelist
• remains of the medieval monastery complex

2. Church of St. George (Oberzell). The Church of St. George (Reichenau‑Oberzell) is famous for its 10th-century wall paintings, which depict miracles of Christ. These frescoes are among the best-preserved medieval murals north of the Alps, making the church one of the island’s most valuable artistic treasures.

3. Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (Niederzell). This church stands in the western part of the island. It is known for:

• its Carolingian and Romanesque architecture
• peaceful lakeside surroundings
• historic bell tower visible across Lake Constance

How to Get to Reichenau

Reichenau Island is easy to reach by train, car, or boat. The most convenient option is to take a train to Reichenau (Baden) railway station, which is located just off the island. From the station, you can cross the causeway to the island in about 25 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by bus. Trains run regularly from nearby cities such as Konstanz (about 10 minutes away), Radolfzell, and Singen. If you are traveling by car, the island is connected to the mainland by a 1-kilometre causeway road, and parking is available near the villages and churches. During the summer months, Reichenau can also be reached by tourist boats on Lake Constance from towns including Konstanz and Radolfzell. In addition, a small seasonal solar ferry operates between the Swiss village of Mannenbach and the island.

Entrance Fees

The island itself has no entrance fee, since it is a living village and agricultural area. Typical costs for visitors:

• Church visits: usually free, donations welcome
• St. George Church frescoes: about €3–5 (may vary seasonally)
• Museum exhibitions: around €3–6

Parking may cost €2–5 per day in some areas.
