Spiaggia di Cefalù is the principal urban beach of Cefalù, a historic town on the northern coast of Sicily, Italy. Located along the Tyrrhenian Sea at the foot of the Norman cathedral and beneath the rocky promontory known as La Rocca, the beach forms an integral part of the town’s cultural and natural landscape. Its combination of sandy shoreline and medieval architecture makes it one of the most recognizable coastal settings in Sicily.

Cefalù is situated approximately 70 km east of Palermo. The town is accessible by regional train from Palermo and Messina, with the railway station located within walking distance of the beach. Road access is provided via the A20 motorway, and paid parking areas are available near the town center, although availability may be limited during peak season. The beach extends directly along the historic center, allowing easy pedestrian access from hotels, restaurants, and residential areas. Its central position makes it one of the most accessible beaches in northern Sicily.

Beach Characteristics

Spiaggia di Cefalù is characterized primarily by fine golden sand, distinguishing it from many pebble beaches found elsewhere in Italy. The seabed slopes gently, and the shallow entry into the sea makes it suitable for families and recreational swimmers. The water is typically clear, with turquoise and deep blue tones depending on light and sea conditions. The beach stretches in a crescent shape along the bay, offering views of the cathedral’s towers and the surrounding cliffs.

Large sections of Spiaggia di Cefalù are freely accessible as public beach (spiaggia libera). In addition, private lidos operate seasonal concessions where visitors may rent umbrellas and sun loungers for a daily fee. These establishments often provide showers, changing cabins, and bar services.

Lifeguard supervision is generally present during the summer months. Numerous cafés, restaurants, and gelaterias are located along the waterfront and in the adjacent historic streets.

The bathing season typically extends from late May through October. Average sea temperatures are approximately:

• 24–27 °C in July and August
• Around 23–24 °C in September

Cefalù has a Mediterranean climate characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. Summer air temperatures frequently range between 28 °C and 34 °C, with high levels of sunshine and limited rainfall.
