Baia dei Turchi (Italian for “Bay of the Turks”) is a natural beach located on the Adriatic coast of the Salento peninsula in the Apulia (Puglia) region of southern Italy. It lies a few kilometres north of Otranto within a protected natural area that includes the Laghi Alimini Oasis, a landscape of dunes, Mediterranean vegetation and pine woods. The bay’s name refers to local legend about the landing of Turkish forces during the 15th-century Siege of Otranto.

Baia dei Turchi is situated approximately 6–7 km north of the town of Otranto on the Adriatic coastline of Apulia. It is part of a scenic stretch of beaches that extend southward toward Torre dell’Orso and other well-known coastal sites. To reach the beach by car, visitors typically follow regional roads from Otranto or Lecce and use one of several paid parking areas near the pine forest. From the parking zones, a 10–15-minute walk through a shaded pine woodland brings you to the shoreline; some parking lots offer a short shuttle service. Public buses or seasonal shuttles from Otranto also serve the area during summer months, and the beach is accessible by bicycle along local coastal routes.

Beach Characteristics

Baia dei Turchi is renowned for its fine white sand that contrasts strikingly with the crystal-clear turquoise water of the Adriatic Sea. The shoreline curves gently along the bay and is backed by dunes and thick Mediterranean vegetation, creating a relatively wild and natural setting. The seabed slopes gradually, with shallow, clear water near the shore that makes swimming and wading comfortable for most visitors, including families with children.

Access to the beach itself is free, although on-site parking typically involves a daily fee, and reaching the sand requires a walk from the car parks. There are no large commercial facilities directly on the beach, although a small seasonal kiosk and seating areas may be available in peak season, and basic services such as showers and toilets can be limited. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own beach gear, water and sun protection due to the natural, minimally developed character of the bay.
