Castel del Monte is one of the most unusual castles in Europe and one of the most famous landmarks of Apulia. Built in the 13th century by Emperor Frederick II, the fortress stands on a remote hill overlooking the countryside of southern Italy. Unlike traditional medieval castles designed mainly for defense, Castel del Monte is known for its perfectly symmetrical octagonal structure, mathematical proportions, and mysterious symbolism.

The castle combines elements of medieval military architecture with influences from classical antiquity, Islamic design, and Gothic style. Its geometric layout includes eight octagonal towers connected to an octagonal central building, creating a unique architectural composition that has fascinated historians, architects, and travelers for centuries. Entrance tickets usually cost around €10–€12 for adults, with reduced prices available for students and young visitors. Spring and autumn are considered the best seasons to visit because temperatures in the region can become extremely hot during summer.

Castel del Monte is located near Andria in the Apulia region and is most easily reached by car from Bari in approximately one hour. Travelers using public transport can take trains to Andria or Barletta before continuing by shuttle bus or taxi to the castle hill. The surrounding rural scenery and elevated location make the site especially attractive for photography and panoramic sightseeing.
