Wilanów Palace (Pałac w Wilanowie) is a splendid baroque residence in the southern Wilanów district of Warsaw, built between 1677 and 1696 as the summer home of King Jan III Sobieski, the victor of the Battle of Vienna. Frequently described as the “Polish Versailles,” it is one of the very few historic residences in the city to survive both the 18th-century partitions of Poland and the destruction of the Second World War largely intact, preserving authentic interiors and furnishings that are rare in Warsaw. The palace museum, opened to the public in 1805, is among the oldest in Poland.

Inside, visitors pass through royal chambers spanning the 17th and 18th centuries, including the White Room, the King’s Antechamber and a Chinese Room with original lacquered panels. The art collection features works attributed to Rembrandt and Van Dyck, portraits of Polish monarchs, and the famous equestrian portrait of Stanisław Kostka Potocki by Jacques-Louis David. The palace is surrounded by richly landscaped grounds combining a formal two-level baroque garden with an English-style landscape park. In autumn and winter the estate hosts the popular Royal Garden of Light, a large-scale illumination of the gardens after dark.

Wilanów lies about 10 kilometres south-east of the city centre at Stanisława Kostki Potockiego 10/16. Bus lines 116, 180 and 519 run to the “Wilanów” stop right by the palace gate — route 180 travels the entire scenic Royal Route on the way. Alternatively, take the metro (line M1) to Wilanowska and change to a local bus, or ride tram 16 and walk a few minutes. The free forecourt and courtyard are open to all; palace interior tickets are generally around 35 PLN and garden entry around 10–15 PLN (introduced in 2026), with reduced fares and free interior admission on Thursdays. The palace is often closed on one weekday, so check the official schedule and expect limited ticket availability at peak times.
