卢塞恩卡佩尔桥

Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) in Lucerne is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe and one of Switzerland’s most photographed landmarks, alongside the Matterhorn.

Location & Access

• The bridge is located in the center of Lucerne, next to the train station and the pier for Lake Lucerne boats.
• Walking from the bridge to the train station takes about 5 minutes.
• From Zurich, Lucerne is reachable by train in about 50 minutes.

历史

• Built in 1365 over the Reuss River, near its outlet into Lake Lucerne.
• Its name, Kapellbrücke, translates from German as “Church” or “Chapel Bridge”.
• The bridge is over 200 meters long, with the tall Wasserturm (Water Tower) in the center.
• The tower, constructed in 1300, predates the bridge and originally served as a water tower. Later, it became part of the city’s defenses, including a guard post and prison. The bridge itself was used for city defense, connecting fortifications on both sides of the river.

Architecture & Features

• The bridge is decorated with flower vases and, under its roof, triangular 17th-century paintings depicting Swiss history.
• Originally there were 111 paintings, but a fire in 1993 destroyed most. Restored copies are now displayed.
• From the bridge, visitors can take pictures of the Reuss River embankment and the old city.
• The Wasserturm now houses a small souvenir shop.
