Fort St Angelo is one of the most important fortresses in the history of Malta, standing at the very tip of the Birgu (Vittoriosa) peninsula and dominating the great natural inlet of the Grand Harbour, directly opposite the capital, Valletta. A stronghold has guarded this rocky point since at least the medieval period, when it was known as the Castrum Maris, or “castle by the sea”; after the Knights of St John arrived in Malta in 1530 they made it their headquarters, renamed it Fort St Angelo and rebuilt it with the bastions and gun platforms that introduced modern fortress design to the islands. It was from here that the Order withstood the Ottoman onslaught during the epic Great Siege of 1565, one of the decisive battles in the history of the Mediterranean.

Opened fully to the public only in 2018, the fort can be explored on a walk up through its layered defences, from the harbour-side gate to the summit, taking in nearly a thousand years of Maltese military history along the way. Displays and restored spaces cover the Knights and the Great Siege, and the later centuries when the fort served the British Royal Navy as the shore base HMS St Angelo, right up to the departure of the last foreign forces in 1979. Highlights include the chapel, the Grand Master’s old quarters and the gun batteries, while a small upper part of the fort remains in the hands of the Sovereign Order of Malta. Above all, the ramparts offer some of the finest panoramas in the country, sweeping across the Grand Harbour to the honey-coloured bastions of Valletta and the neighbouring Three Cities.

Fort St Angelo lies at the end of the Birgu (Vittoriosa) peninsula, one of the historic Three Cities on the south side of the Grand Harbour, a short distance across the water from Valletta. It is easily reached from the capital by the traditional dgħajsa harbour boats or by ferry to the Three Cities, followed by a short walk through Birgu’s atmospheric streets to the fort’s gate; buses and taxis also serve the area, and driving takes around fifteen minutes from Valletta. The fort is managed by Heritage Malta and is ticketed, keeping regular daytime opening hours (check current days, as it may close on some weekdays). Allow an hour or two for the climb and the exhibitions, wear comfortable shoes for the ramps and steps, and combine it with a wander around Birgu and its waterfront.
