St John’s Co-Cathedral is the greatest church in Malta and one of the finest Baroque interiors in Europe — the conventual church of the Knights of St John, built in the heart of their new capital, Valletta. It was raised between 1572 and 1577 to a severe, fortress-like design, but over the following century the Knights transformed the inside into an overwhelming display of wealth and artistry, so that its plain stone exterior gives no hint of the golden splendour within. Each of the great national divisions of the Order, or langues, endowed its own richly decorated chapel, and the whole church became a monument to the power and piety of the men who had saved Malta from the Ottomans.

Stepping inside is breathtaking: the walls and ceiling are a mass of carved and gilded stone, and the entire floor is a carpet of around 400 inlaid marble tombstones, brilliantly coloured, marking the graves of the knights. The immense barrel vault was painted by the Calabrian master Mattia Preti in the 1660s with scenes from the life of St John the Baptist, and Preti, who also oversaw the church’s Baroque redecoration, lies buried here himself. The supreme treasure, though, hangs in the Oratory: Caravaggio’s “The Beheading of St John the Baptist,” painted in 1608 — the artist’s largest work and the only painting he ever signed, its signature traced in the saint’s blood. A small museum displays magnificent Flemish tapestries and other treasures of the Order.

St John’s Co-Cathedral stands in the centre of Valletta, on St John’s Square just off the main Republic Street, a few minutes’ walk from the City Gate and easily reached with the rest of the capital by bus, ferry or on foot. Entry is ticketed, with an audio guide usually included and reduced rates for seniors and students; the cathedral is open to visitors Monday to Saturday and closed to sightseeing on Sundays and during services, so plan around this. Modest dress is required and, to protect the marble floor, high stiletto heels are not allowed. Allow around an hour, book ahead in peak season to avoid the queues, and combine your visit with the other sights of Valletta close by.
