Cologne Carnival (Kölner Karneval) is a major annual festival held in Cologne, Germany, renowned for its colorful parades, elaborate costumes, and vibrant street celebrations. Often referred to as the “fifth season”, the carnival officially begins on November 11 at 11:11 a.m., but the main festivities take place during the week leading up to Ash Wednesday (in february). The event attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from across Germany and around the world.

Cologne Carnival is a blend of centuries-old traditions and modern public celebrations. While the festival’s roots trace back to medieval religious customs, today it is a secular celebration emphasizing humor, satire, and social commentary. Street parties, costume balls, and lively parades characterize the event, creating a joyful atmosphere throughout the city.

The carnival is organized by local societies called Karnevalsgesellschaften, which play a key role in arranging parades, performances, and official ceremonies.

Key Events

• Opening Ceremony (“Weiberfastnacht”) – Held on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, this event marks the start of the main carnival week. Women play a central role, symbolically taking over city halls, cutting men’s ties, and leading celebrations.
• Rosenmontag parade – Parades Cologne is famous for its grand Rosenmontag parade, the highlight of the carnival. Floats often feature satirical depictions of politicians, celebrities, and current events. Streets are crowded with locals and tourists in colorful costumes.
• Street Parties and Costume Balls – Throughout carnival week, Cologne’s neighborhoods host street parties, music events, and themed balls. Popular districts include the Old Town (Altstadt) and city squares around the cathedral.
• Carnival Sunday and Ash Wednesday – Smaller parades and local events occur on Sunday, culminating with Ash Wednesday rituals that mark the festival’s end and the beginning of Lent.

The parade typically follows central streets such as Hohe Straße and Schildergasse, passing through the Altstadt (Old Town) and historic squares like Neumarkt, Heumarkt, and Alter Markt. While it doesn’t go directly in front of Cologne Cathedral, the area around the cathedral is a lively hub for carnival celebrations, street parties, and music performances.
