Mount Athos, also known as the Holy Mountain, is one of the most unique destinations in Greece. Located on the eastern peninsula of Chalkidiki, Mount Athos is an autonomous monastic state with more than twenty Orthodox monasteries built on cliffs above the Aegean Sea. The area has been an important spiritual center for over a thousand years and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Unlike ordinary tourist destinations, Mount Athos is famous for its isolation, Byzantine architecture, ancient monasteries, and strict religious traditions. Women are not allowed to enter the peninsula, while male visitors require a special permit issued in advance. Because of these restrictions, most travelers explore Athos from the sea on sightseeing cruises.

Boat Tours and Excursions

The most popular way to see Mount Athos is by boat excursion departing from Ouranoupoli, the main gateway town to the monastic republic. During the cruise, boats travel along the western coast of the peninsula, allowing visitors to admire several monasteries from the sea while guides explain the history of the region.

Typical excursions last between 3 and 5 hours. Standard sightseeing cruises usually cost around €25–40 per person, while larger catamaran or private cruises may be more expensive. Some tours also include swimming stops or visits to nearby islands such as Ammouliani.

Visitors can see famous monasteries including:

• and panoramic views of the 2,033-meter Mount Athos peak itself.

How to Reach Mount Athos

Most travelers first arrive in Thessaloniki, the largest city in northern Greece. From Thessaloniki, it takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours by car or bus to reach Ouranoupoli. Regular buses operate during the tourist season, while organized tours from Thessaloniki are also widely available.

For men wishing to enter the monastic republic itself, an official permit called a “Diamonitirion” is required. Visitor numbers are strictly limited each day, and overnight stays are usually arranged directly with the monasteries. Because of the complicated process, most tourists prefer the easier and more accessible coastal cruise experience.
