伊斯坦布尔隧道缆车

Tünel funicular in Istanbul is one of the oldest subway lines in the world. It connect Karaköy and the residential district of Pera (modern-day Beyoğlu). Construction began in 1871, and the line officially opened on January 17, 1875. Originally powered by steam engines, the line was later modernized and electrified.

The line connects two stations:

• Karaköy Station (lower): located near the Galata Bridge, at the base of the hill.
• Beyoğlu Station (upper): located at Tünel Square, near the southern end of Istiklal Avenue and close to Galata Tower.

Travel time between the stations is only 90 seconds. Each train consists of two carriages (capacity about 170 passengers each), designed in a vintage style reminiscent of the railway’s 19th-century origins.

The Tünel is integrated into Istanbul’s public transportation network and is marked as line F2. It connects directly with the T1 tram line at Karaköy and provides convenient access to the M2 metro line from Beyoğlu.

Tickets and Fares

The funicular can be accessed with a standard Istanbul public transport ticket. In 2020, the single fare was 5 Turkish liras. Using the Istanbulkart (the city’s electronic transport card) reduces the price to 2.7 liras.

Cultural and Tourist Significance

Although it serves as practical public transport for residents, the Tünel is also a popular attraction for tourists due to its historical importance and unique character. It provides a quick and comfortable alternative to climbing Galata Hill, while offering convenient access between the historic Sultanahmet district and the modern Beyoğlu district.

Visitors often combine a ride on the Tünel with a walking descent back down through the charming, narrow streets of Galata, which are lined with cafés, shops, and historic buildings.

Today, the Tünel remains not only a functional part of Istanbul’s transportation system but also a living monument to the city’s modernization efforts in the late 19th century.
