Postojna Cave, Slovenia

Slovenia’s most famous show cave: a 1½-hour tour by underground train and on foot past the Brilliant stalagmite and the olms; adult tickets €34.90 in 2026.

Postojna Cave, Slovenia

Postojna Cave is one of the largest and most visited karst cave systems in Slovenia, located near the town of Postojna in the southwestern part of the country. The cave extends for over 24 kilometers of passageways, galleries, and halls, though about 5 kilometers are accessible to the public. The system is renowned for its impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and unique rock formations, as well as for hosting the endemic olm (Proteus anguinus), a rare blind aquatic salamander native to the region.

Visitors can easily reach Postojna Cave by car or public transport. The cave is about a 50-minute drive from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, along well-marked highways. Trains and buses also connect Postojna to major Slovenian cities. From the visitor center, a short electric cave train takes guests deep into the cave, providing a scenic and convenient introduction before starting the guided walking tour.

The tour lasts about 1½ hours. The cave railway, in use since 1872, carries visitors through the Gothic Hall and the Ballroom to the Great Mountain; from there a guided walk leads across the Russian Bridge, through the Spaghetti, White and Red Halls to the Brilliant, the snow-white stalagmite that is the symbol of the cave, and past an aquarium with olms before the train returns to the surface. Tours are guided in Slovenian, English, German and Italian, with audio guides for other languages. The temperature inside is a constant 10 °C, so bring a warm jacket.

In 2026 a ticket costs €34.90 for adults, €27.80 for students aged 16–25 and €20.70 for children aged 6–15; children up to 5 pay €1. Combined tickets, for example with Predjama Castle, cost less than separate tickets. Advance booking is recommended in the peak season.

Postojna Cave is famous not only for its size and accessibility but also for its historical significance and natural beauty. It has been open to visitors since the early 19th century and has hosted millions of tourists from around the world. Its underground train system, vast halls, and dramatic formations make it one of Slovenia’s most iconic natural attractions and a highlight for anyone exploring the Karst region.
