Škocjan Caves, Slovenia

UNESCO-listed karst caves in Slovenia: a 2½–3-hour guided walk through one of Europe’s largest underground canyons, crossing the Cerkvenik Bridge high above the Reka.

Škocjan Caves, Slovenia

The Škocjan Caves are a remarkable karst cave system located in the southwestern part of Slovenia, near the village of Škocjan in the Karst region. The caves are situated within the Škocjan Caves Regional Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for its outstanding natural and geological value. The underground system features one of the largest known subterranean canyons in the world, with vast chambers, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic stalactite and stalagmite formations that have formed over millions of years.

Visitors can reach the Škocjan Caves by car or public transport from nearby towns such as Divača or Koper. From Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, the journey takes about 90 minutes by car. The park provides guided tours to ensure safety and protect the delicate cave environment, and parking and visitor facilities are available near the entrance. The walk from the visitor center to the cave entrance passes through scenic forested areas, adding to the experience.

The guided tour starts at the visitor centre and first leads through the dry Silent Cave, where the huge Giant stalagmite stands in the Great Hall, then into the Murmuring Cave, where the Cerkvenik Bridge crosses the underground canyon high above the roaring Reka. Back in daylight, the route continues through the Big and Little Collapse Dolines. The full circuit takes 2½ to 3 hours, with about 5 km of walking and some 1,000 steps; an earlier exit in the Big Collapse Doline shortens it to about 3 km, and from October to April all tours end there. Inside, the temperature is about 12 °C and photography is not allowed.

Ticket prices depend on the season. In 2026 adults pay €16 from November to March, €18 in April and October, €22 in May, June and September and €24 in July and August; seniors and students under 26 pay €12–18 and children €7.50–12.50. The caves are open every day except 1 January and 25 December.

Škocjan Caves are renowned for their immense scale, geological significance, and extraordinary natural beauty. The caves host an underground river, the Reka, which disappears into the karst and emerges several kilometers away at the springs of the Timavo River in Italy. The combination of enormous underground chambers, natural bridges, and the sound of flowing water makes the Škocjan Caves one of Slovenia’s most impressive natural attractions and a must-visit destination for tourists interested in geology and speleology.
