Wartburg Castle is one of the most important and best-preserved medieval castles in Germany. Perched high above the town of Eisenach, it is closely associated with Martin Luther, Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, and key events in German cultural history. The castle is also significant in medieval legend and 19th-century German nationalism, making it a powerful symbol of cultural identity. In 1999, Wartburg Castle was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Location
Wartburg Castle stands on a wooded hill overlooking Eisenach, in the federal state of Thuringia, central Germany. The castle dominates the surrounding forested landscape and provides wide views over the region. The castle is accessible by several means:

- Bus/Shuttle: Special shuttle buses run from Eisenach city center to the castle entrance
- Walking: A marked hiking path (approximately 30–45 minutes uphill) leads from the town to the castle
Eisenach lies along major rail routes between Frankfurt and Leipzig.
