Perched high above the town of Eisenach, it is closely associated with Martin Luther, Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, and key events in German cultural history. The castle is also significant in medieval legend and 19th-century German nationalism, making it a powerful symbol of cultural identity. In 1999, Wartburg Castle was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
