Villajoyosa (La Vila Joiosa) is a small seaside town on the Costa Blanca, in the province of Alicante, in eastern Spain. Its main beach, Playa Centro, lies in front of the old town. What makes it special is the row of tall houses painted in bright colours, such as red, yellow, blue and green, that stand right above the beach. According to local tradition, fishermen painted their houses in different colours so they could see their homes from the sea. The beach has golden sand and pebbles, and clear blue water.
What to See
The colourful houses are the main sight and the best place for photos, especially from the beach or from the bridge over the river. Walk along the seaside promenade and into the old town, with its narrow streets and small squares. Villajoyosa is also known as a town of chocolate, with a long tradition of chocolate making. You can visit a chocolate museum and factory and taste local chocolate. The town has a small fishing port, and there are other quiet beaches and coves along the coast nearby.
How to Get There and Practical Information
Villajoyosa is about 30 kilometres north of Alicante and about 10 kilometres south of Benidorm. You can get there by car, by bus or by the TRAM tram line that runs along the coast between Alicante and Benidorm. The beach is free. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented in summer. The town is quieter than Benidorm, which makes it a good choice for a relaxed beach day. The colourful houses look best in the morning light.
