Old Town of Morella, Spain

Morella is a medieval town in the north of the province of Castellón, in the Valencian Community, in eastern Spain. It is built on the side of a hill in the mountains, and at the top of the hill stands a castle on a huge rock. The whole old town is surrounded by stone walls about 2 kilometres long, with towers and gates. From a distance, Morella looks like a town from a fairy tale. It has a long history, and over the centuries it was an important place of defence. Its walls and old streets are very well preserved.

What to See

The castle at the top of the town is the main sight. The walk up is steep, but from the top there are wide views over the town, the walls and the mountains around. In the old town, the Gothic church of Santa María la Mayor has beautiful carved doors and a special raised choir with a spiral staircase. The main street, called Blasco de Alagón, has covered arcades with shops and cafés. You can also walk along the outside of the walls and see the old gates. Morella is known for its local food, such as truffles, lamb and cheese, and for traditional wool blankets.

How to Get There and Practical Information

Morella is about 2 hours by car from Castellón de la Plana and about 2.5 hours from Valencia. There are also buses from Castellón and Vinaròs. Cars are best left in the car parks outside the walls, and the old town is explored on foot. Walking around the town is free, and there is a small fee to visit the castle. The streets are steep, so wear comfortable shoes. The town is in the mountains, so it can be cool, even in summer evenings. It is a good idea to stay overnight, when the town is quiet and the walls are lit.
