Calp Beach & Peñón de Ifach

Calp (Calpe in Spanish) is a seaside town on the Costa Blanca, in the province of Alicante, in eastern Spain. It is famous for the Peñón de Ifach, a huge limestone rock that rises 332 metres straight out of the sea next to the town. The rock is a protected natural park and the symbol of Calp. On both sides of it are sandy beaches. The main ones are Arenal-Bol Beach, close to the old town, and La Fossa (Levante) Beach on the other side, both with golden sand and clear water.

What to See

The beaches are good for swimming, snorkelling and water sports, and they have promenades with cafés and restaurants. You can walk up the Peñón de Ifach on a marked path. The last part goes through a short tunnel and is steep and rocky, but the views from the top are amazing. Behind the beaches is Las Salinas, an old salt lake where you can often see pink flamingos. In the small old town there are narrow streets, a church and murals. The fishing port near the rock has a fish market and seafood restaurants.

How to Get There and Practical Information

Calp is about 65 kilometres north of Alicante and about 25 kilometres north of Benidorm. You can get there by car, by bus or by the TRAM tram line. The beaches are free, and sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented in summer. Entry to the Peñón de Ifach natural park is free, but in busy periods the number of people on the path may be limited. If you climb the rock, wear good shoes and bring water.
