Postiguet Beach (Platja del Postiguet) is the main city beach of Alicante, on the Costa Blanca in eastern Spain. It lies right in the centre of the city, so you can walk from the shops and restaurants straight onto the sand. The beach is about 900 metres long, with fine golden sand and calm, clear water. Above it rises Mount Benacantil with the Santa Bárbara Castle on top, which makes a beautiful background. The beach has a Blue Flag for its clean water and good services.
What to See
The beach is good for swimming and sunbathing, and it has showers, toilets, sunbeds and lifeguards in summer. Next to it is the Explanada de España, Alicante’s famous seaside promenade, with palm trees and a floor made of millions of small tiles in a wave pattern. From the beach you can go up to Santa Bárbara Castle, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain, by a lift inside the mountain or on foot. From the castle there are wide views over the beach, the city and the sea. The old town, El Barrio, with narrow streets and colourful houses, is also very close.
How to Get There and Practical Information
Postiguet Beach is in the centre of Alicante, a short walk from the old town and the port. The city has an airport about 20 minutes away by bus or taxi, and good train connections. The tram stop Mercado and several bus lines are nearby. The beach is free. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented in summer. Because it is a city beach, it can be very busy in July and August, so come early in the day. The water is warm from June to October.
