Sozopol is one of the oldest towns on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Its historical center has been largely preserved and is recognized for its architectural and cultural heritage.
Location
Sozopol is located approximately 34 km south of Burgas. The travel time by car or regular bus along the highway is about 30–40 minutes. Visitors can join organized tours from local travel agencies or explore the town independently.
The surrounding area features numerous rocky bays and sandy beaches. Nearby is St. Ivan Island, the largest Bulgarian island in the Black Sea. The town itself is situated on a peninsula extending into the sea.
Historical and Cultural Significance
The old part of Sozopol is a national architectural and archaeological reserve. Preserved elements include:
- Traditional Bulgarian wooden houses from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
- Remains of the medieval fortress wall.
- Several churches.
- Ruins of the ancient Greek colony of Apollonia, founded in the 7th century BC.
Notable Sights
Significant attractions in Sozopol include:
- The fortress wall surrounding the old town along the coastline, with a scenic pedestrian street adjacent to the cliff.
- Religious buildings such as the Church of the Holy Mother of God, featuring a wooden iconostasis, and the churches of St. George (with a 4th-century marble altar) and St. Zosima.
- Early 20th-century civic architecture, including the post office building and the Fishing School, located on the small island of Kirika across the city harbor.
Beaches and Accommodation
The central beach lies between Old and New Sozopol, accompanied by a boulevard lined with palm trees and a small park. For less crowded beaches, visitors often choose Golden Fish Beach to the north or Harmani Beach to the south of the old town.
Sozopol offers a range of accommodations, from guest houses and rental apartments to higher-end hotels such as the five-star Santa Marina and San Tomas. Most local hotels have two to three stars. The town has small shops and markets, but larger shopping centers are available in Burgas.
Additional Information
The town hosts cultural events during the summer, including music and art festivals that attract both domestic and international visitors. The combination of historical architecture, coastal scenery, and cultural activities makes Sozopol a notable destination on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
