Vienna, the capital of Austria, is one of the major European destinations for Christmas and New Year celebrations. The city has a long tradition of holding Christmas markets, the first of which was recorded in 1296. In modern times, Vienna often begins its Christmas fairs in the first half of November, earlier than most other European cities.
The number of Christmas markets in Vienna varies annually, ranging from 12 to 30. Markets are typically located in the city center and offer food, sweets, handmade chocolates, souvenirs, Christmas decorations, and beverages such as mulled wine and punch.
Major Christmas Markets
- St. Stephen’s Cathedral and Graben Square – the most visited market. Mulled wine is served in branded ceramic mugs, which are available as souvenirs for a deposit of approximately three euros.
- Schönbrunn Palace – a larger market with tables, chairs, and covered areas, providing more space for visitors.
- Vienna Ring and City Squares – including Rathausplatz (Town Hall), Maria Theresa Square near Hofburg Palace, Belvedere Palace, Karlskirche Square, Am Hof Square, and Freyung Square. The market near Rathausplatz is the largest, featuring an ice-skating rink.
During the period just before New Year, many markets close. Some remain open longer, such as the fairs at Schönbrunn Palace (availability varies), the Graben pedestrian zone, and Maria Theresa Square. A winter market at Riesenradplatz remains open until January 8.
In addition to markets, the city streets, churches, and cathedrals are decorated with lights and garlands. St. Stephen’s Cathedral sometimes hosts laser shows, and musical performances are organized on stages in nearby squares.
New Year Celebrations
The largest New Year festivities take place in the city center, particularly on Graben Square and near St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Concerts, performances, and public gatherings mark the transition to the New Year, and fireworks are often displayed over central areas.
