Vienna’s climate through the year
Vienna has a continental touch: hot summers, cold winters and comparatively little rain. From June to August afternoons reach 26–27 °C and nights stay mild at 16–18 °C, while December and January bring 4–5 °C by day and frost at night. Strong westerly winds are common, and the city sees only 7–10 rainy days in most months — May and June, with their thunderstorms, are the wettest.
Best time for sightseeing
April to early June and September to October are the most pleasant times to explore Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens, the Belvedere and the Ringstraße on foot, with 16–22 °C. Late November to Christmas belongs to the Christmas markets in front of the City Hall and at Schönbrunn, when mulled wine helps against temperatures around freezing.
Museums for grey days
Few cities are better prepared for bad weather. The Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Natural History Museum face each other across Maria-Theresien-Platz, the Hofburg holds the imperial apartments and the Sisi Museum, and St. Stephen’s Cathedral is a short walk away. A coffee-house afternoon is a Viennese tradition in its own right.
