Karlštejn Castle is one of the most important medieval castles in Central Europe. Founded in 1348 by Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia Charles IV, the fortress was built to safeguard royal treasures, sacred relics, and the imperial crown jewels. Perched on a wooded hill above the village of Karlštejn, the castle remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Czech Republic.
The castle complex is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, featuring fortified walls, towers, courtyards, and richly decorated chapels. Its most famous section is the Chapel of the Holy Cross, considered one of the finest medieval interiors in Europe. Decorated with precious stones, gilded elements, and a remarkable collection of Gothic paintings, the chapel once housed some of the most valuable treasures of the Holy Roman Empire. Visitors can also explore royal halls, historical exhibitions, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the surrounding countryside.
