Saint Barbara’s Church & Kutná Hora old city, Czech Republic

St. Barbara’s Church is one of the most magnificent Gothic churches in Central Europe and the symbol of Kutná Hora. Construction began in 1388 when the town was one of the richest places in Europe thanks to its prosperous silver mines. Dedicated to Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners, the church reflects the wealth and ambition of the medieval mining community that helped shape the Kingdom of Bohemia.

The church is famous for its soaring vaulted ceilings, elaborate stone carvings, stained-glass windows, and distinctive roofline featuring elegant Gothic spires. Inside, visitors can admire medieval frescoes depicting mining activities, religious scenes, and daily life in Kutná Hora. Large windows flood the interior with natural light, creating one of the most impressive Gothic spaces in the Czech Republic.

Visitor Information

The historic center of Kutná Hora is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its exceptional preservation and importance in European history. Beyond Saint Barbara’s Church, visitors can explore cobbled streets, historic merchant houses, former silver-mining sites, and charming town squares. The scenic Jesuit College terrace next to the church offers beautiful views over the surrounding countryside and the old city.
