Nyhavn: Copenhagen’s Iconic Waterfront Canal, Denmark

Nyhavn (literally “New Harbour”) is a canal and entertainment district in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark, stretching from the grand square of Kongens Nytorv down to the inner harbour. It sits in the Indre By (old town) and is one of the easiest landmarks to reach in the city. The most direct route is the Metro to Kongens Nytorv station, which leaves you a one-minute walk from the head of the canal. Numerous city buses also stop nearby, and the area is a comfortable 10–15 minute stroll from Copenhagen Central Station. Because the whole district is an open public space, there is no entrance fee and it can be visited at any hour of the day or night.

The canal was dug in the 1670s to connect the sea with the city centre, allowing cargo ships to unload directly in the middle of town. Today its defining feature is the row of brightly painted gabled townhouses in shades of ochre, red, blue, and mustard, which date from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The waterfront is also famous as a former home of the fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, who lived at several addresses along the canal, including number 20 and number 67. Old wooden sailing vessels are moored along the quay, reinforcing the area’s maritime character and making it a favourite subject for photographers.

What to See and Do

Beyond simply admiring the houses, Nyhavn is the main departure point for Copenhagen’s popular canal boat tours, which thread through the harbour and past landmarks such as the Opera House and the Black Diamond library. The sunny northern side of the canal is packed with restaurants, bars, and outdoor terraces, where visitors can try traditional Danish open sandwiches (smørrebrød) or a local beer. Prices at the canal-side venues are higher than the city average, so many travellers prefer to grab a drink and enjoy the view from one of the public benches. In December, Nyhavn hosts one of the city’s most atmospheric Christmas markets, while in summer the quay becomes a buzzing meeting place from morning until late evening.
