Cairo weather on the edge of the desert
Cairo has a hot desert climate with almost no rain: at most one or two wet days a year, usually in winter. Summer is long and hot, with afternoons of about 35–38 °C from June to August and warm nights around 22–24 °C. Winter is mild and sunny, with 19–22 °C by day, but nights can feel cool at 9–11 °C.
The best months for the pyramids
November to March, with 19–26 °C, is the most comfortable time to explore the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, where there is very little shade. In summer, arrive at opening time and leave the hottest hours for the treasures of the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square or the Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza.
Spring winds and dust
In spring, especially from March to May, the hot, dry khamsin wind can blow in from the desert, bringing sand, haze and sudden rises in temperature. On such days sunglasses and a scarf help, and museums, mosques and the narrow lanes of the Khan el-Khalili bazaar are a better choice than the open plateau of Giza.
