Luxor weather in the Nile Valley

Luxor has one of the driest and sunniest climates on Earth: rain practically never falls, and the sky is clear almost every day. Summers are extremely hot, with afternoons of 39–41 °C from May to September. Winter is the main season: from December to February days are pleasant at 22–24 °C, but desert nights drop to 9–11 °C, so evenings on the Nile call for a jacket.

When to see the temples

October to April, with 22–35 °C, is the best time for Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut. Even then, start at sunrise: a hot-air balloon flight over the West Bank at dawn is a classic, and the tombs and temples are much more comfortable before midday.

Coping with the summer heat

From May to September, sightseeing is best limited to the early morning and the late afternoon, with a long rest in between. Carry plenty of water, wear a hat and light clothing, and consider a Nile cruise, where the river breeze makes the heat easier to bear.
