Budapest weather by season
Budapest is one of the warmest capitals of central Europe in summer and one of the sunniest overall. July and August reach 28 °C on average, with hot spells above 32 °C, and nights stay around 18 °C. Winters are cold but fairly dry: 4–5 °C by day in December and January, light frost at night and only 8–10 days with rain or snow a month.
Best months to visit
April, May, September and October offer 17–23 °C, long walks along the Danube and comfortable climbs to the Fisherman’s Bastion and Buda Castle. September and October are especially dry, with only about eight rainy days. In August the Sziget Festival takes over an island in the river, and from late November Christmas markets fill Vörösmarty Square and the square in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica.
Thermal baths on cold days
The best answer to a grey or freezing day is a soak in the thermal baths: the outdoor pools of the Széchenyi Baths stay warm even when it snows. Matthias Church, the guided tours of the Parliament and the labyrinth under Castle Hill are good indoor alternatives.
