Rothschild Boulevard (Hebrew: שדרות רוטשילד, Sderot Rothschild) is one of the most historic and prestigious streets in Tel Aviv, Israel. Known for its tree-lined pedestrian promenade, bicycle paths, and mix of historic Bauhaus buildings with modern skyscrapers, the boulevard is both a cultural landmark and one of the city’s main financial centers.
History
The boulevard was named after Baron Edmond James de Rothschild, a philanthropist who played a key role in supporting the early Jewish settlement in Palestine. Established in the early 20th century, before the official founding of Tel Aviv, it became the heart of the city’s social life. Inspired by the Champs-Élysées in Paris, the street was envisioned by Jewish immigrants from France as a grand boulevard. In its early years, Rothschild Boulevard was where residents strolled in elegant attire and built elaborate houses.
Architecture
Many buildings on Rothschild Boulevard are listed as part of the White City of Tel Aviv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The predominant style is Bauhaus, reflecting the modernist wave of the 1920s–1940s. Numerous houses on the boulevard have their own distinct history, including the Lederberg House (with frescoes), Abraham Friedman’s house (featuring the sculpture Choir), and others such as:
- No. 11 Jacob House
- No. 23 Golomb House
- No. 25 New York Hotel
- No. 27 Carousel House
- No. 32 Ben Nachum Hotel
- No. 40 Community Committee House
- No. 46 Levin House
Landmarks
Key attractions along the boulevard include:
- Independence Hall, where Israel’s Declaration of Independence was signed in 1948.
- Public art and sculptures, including works dedicated to city founder Meir Dizengoff.
- A free open-air library, pond, and landscaped park areas along the central pedestrian strip.
Present Day
Today, Rothschild Boulevard remains one of the most expensive and desirable addresses in Tel Aviv. While preserving its historic charm, the area has also developed into the financial district of the city, with modern high-rises and the offices of major companies located just behind the façades of the older houses. The boulevard is also a popular place for walking, cycling, and leisure, making it both a cultural and economic hub of Tel Aviv.
