Naples and Campania: weather by season
Naples enjoys a sunny Mediterranean climate on its bay, with hot summers and mild, rainy winters. July and August reach 32 °C, with warm nights of about 20 °C and very little rain. November is the wettest month, with showers on about 15 days, but winter days still reach 11–13 °C, and snow in the city is a rarity — though Vesuvius sometimes wears a white cap.
Best time for Pompeii and the coast
April, May and October are ideal for Pompeii, Herculaneum and the climb up Vesuvius, with 19–22 °C. Summer suits days on the water around Capri and the Amalfi Coast, but sightseeing in Pompeii at 32 °C is hard work, so go early and carry water.
Underground Naples on rainy days
When it rains, Naples has a whole city below its streets: Napoli Sotterranea leads into Greek and Roman tunnels and cisterns. The National Archaeological Museum, with its treasures from Pompeii, and the glass-roofed Galleria Umberto I are other good places to stay dry.
