Galleria Umberto I is a large and elegant shopping arcade in the centre of Naples, in the south of Italy. It was built between 1887 and 1890 by the architect Emanuele Rocco and named after King Umberto I of Italy. The arcade was the first big project in the rebuilding of the old, crowded streets of Naples at the end of the 19th century. The building has the shape of a cross, with four wings covered by glass roofs on iron frames. In the middle, where the wings meet, rises a great glass dome about 57 metres high. The Galleria is part of the Historic Centre of Naples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and today it is a popular meeting place.
What to See
Look up at the high glass roof and the dome with its 16 metal ribs, which let natural light fill the whole arcade. The walls are decorated with columns, statues and rich details in the style of the late 19th century. Under the dome, the marble floor has a beautiful mosaic showing the signs of the zodiac. Along the arcade there are shops, cafés and bars where you can stop for a coffee or a pastry. The main entrance faces the Teatro di San Carlo, the famous opera house, and Piazza del Plebiscito and the Royal Palace are only a few steps away.
How to Get There and Practical Information
The Galleria is in the centre of Naples, between Via Toledo and Via San Carlo. The nearest metro stations are Municipio and Toledo. It is free to enter and walk through, and it is open all day. It is a good place to rest and get out of the sun or rain while exploring the city. It is easy to combine a visit with Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace, the Teatro di San Carlo and Castel Nuovo, which are all nearby.
